Their warnings could become self-fulfilling prophecies if they frighten enough people into holding tightly onto their wallets. With consumer spending accounting for two-thirds of economic activity, anything that further rattles consumers can undercut recovery hopes. Recent data has shown that, after growing moderately for most of the past year, the U.S. economy appears to be slowing. This was underscored by Friday's government report that U.S. economic growth slowed to 2.4… Full Story »

The European stress tests continue to be discussed in the media. The irony is that the stress tests were intended to de-stress the markets. Instead, the response has been all over the place. European Union stress tests found banks need to raise 3.5 billion euros of capital, about a tenth of the lowest analyst estimate, leaving doubts about whether regulators were tough enough." Had the Tier 1 threshold been 7 percent [1% higher], 24 [18 more] of the banks would have failed, said Andrew Sheets, Morgan Stanley's head of European credit strategy in London." It was precisely the providential prodding Americans needed to wean ourselves from the diabolic goo that runs our cars, heats our homes and makes the plastic that makes the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip possible. While President Obama seemed to dither, the anointed consciences of American life combusted with frustration and rage. New York Times columnist… Full Story »

  12. Problems With Pew's New Pakistan Poll - By Kalsoom Lakhani

    afpak.foreignpolicy.com via @gmugpss  &bull Today

Yesterday, the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project, which conducts public opinion surveys around the world, released a new poll on Pakistani perceptions based on face-to-face interviews conducted from April 13 to April 28, 2010. However, the sample size is relatively small -- 2,000 Pakistani adults out of a population of 180 million -- and admittedly "disproportionately urban." Moreover, while Pew polled people in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (formerly NWFP), portions of Balochistan and K-P were not included because of instability. Pakistan's tribal areas (FATA), Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir were also not included in the survey, leading… Full Story »

WASHINGTON - As the Gulf of Mexico focuses on cleaning up the mess left by the BP oil spill, the question facing the nation's capital is: Will Washington clean up its act, too? Congress is considering stricter regulation of oil exploration, and the Obama administration has pledged to overhaul the disgraced federal agency that oversees oil drilling. Already, however, some of the toughest proposals are facing stiff opposition from Republicans and some Gulf Coast Democrats whose constituents rely on the oil industry for jobs. The oil industry also is likely to fight the changes. It contributed more than $35 million… Full Story »
