#10: Democratic National Convention DenverInfill Blog
DenverInfill Blog &bull Feb 20, 2010Number 10 in our countdown of Denvers Top 10 Urbanism Achievements of the Aughts is Denvers hosting of the Democratic National Convention. As events go, hosting a national political convention is pretty big. Certainly not Olympic big, but bigger than, say, hosting the Superbowl. Add in the historic significance of Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee, and for one week in August 2008, Denver was in the national and, sort of, international spotlight. Hosting an event like the DNC had its risks. Bad weather, terrorist attacks, rioting protesters, poor planning and/or logistical execution, technical failures the list is long of… Full Story »

The Silence Of The Bishops
The Daily Dish &bull Feb 18, 2010
Reading your post about Thiessen, complete with the statement from the conference of Catholic bishops, makes me wonder about something. Patrick Kennedy was barred from communion for thinking abortion ought to remain legal. St. Louis Archbishop Burke forbade John Kerry from taking communion while campaigning in the area in 2004. During the Democratic National Convention, Denver archbishop Chaput noisily suggested that Joe Biden skip communion too. Call me a cynic, but conferences of Catholic bishops may issue clear, even categorical statements against torture all they want. Until a single Catholic cleric on the planet has… Full Story »

Evan Bayh talks with members of New Hampshire Young Democrats before an address in 2006 in Portsmouth, N.H. as one of several potential Democratic presidential primary contenders. In 1996, Evan Bayh seemed to be on the verge of Democratic stardom as a popular, 40-year-old Indiana governor whose gravitas and squeaky-clean good looks earned him the keynote speaking spot at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. But that Chicago speech memorable now for just how forgettable it was had the opposite effect of the electrifying keynote address Barack Obama delivered eight years later. On paper, Bayh seemed like an ideal national… Full Story »
